Four
MPs have threatened to sue unless people with disabilities are fairly
represented in senior public appointments. They said the government is
not properly constituted because people with disabilities were left out
of recent Cabinet appointments.
The Kenya Disability Parliamentary Association’s Timothy Wanyonyi (Westlands), Rose Museu (Makueni MP) and nominated MPs Isaac Mwaura and Robert Mutemi said people with disabilities are being discriminated in public appointments.
The constitution requires that at least five per cent of public appointments must represent people with disabilities. “We will challenge the composition of this government in the courts. What we are saying is nothing new. A mere five per cent is not too much to ask. Zero representation is not progression but digression. We are demanding our rights as Kenyans,” Wanyonyi said.
Mwaura said people with disabilities must be considered in the pending Principal Secretary appointments. “People with disabilities must never be left out of public responsibilities. We are able and ready to serve the people of Kenya,” he said.
