Kenya Recce squad power cut off for engaging too much on social media on their gadgets especially Facebook.

OVER 600 GSU’s elite squad ‘Recce Company’ which forms part of the Presidential escort team have been in darkness for three months at their base in Ruiru.

The officers have experienced power rationing which according to a source was disconnected.

Speaking to the Star on phone, the source who is an officer at the base said they have suffered due to the blackouts.

“We have been in darkness for three months now. It’s very disturbing especially to our family members whom we live with. We can’t even charge phones,” he said.

The Star has also established that some senior officers at the Camp are not affected by the ‘rationing’.

According to multiple sources from the Recce squad, the power rationing has been conducted deliberately because the officers have been engaging too much on social media on their gadgets.

“We think it’s an intentional act since most of us engage much on social media. Social media has taken centre stage which seems to bother the bosses. It is our right to know what is trending,” said the officer.

Newly appointed GSU Commandant Joel Mboya Kitili who was then Rift Valley regional commander, confirmed the incident and pointed fingers at Vigilance House, saying that it was part of reducing costs.

Kitili replaced William Sayia, who is now the director of the Kenya National Focal Point on Small Arms and Light Weapons.

“We are doing this to reduce costs. I think it’s the work of vigilance. They could be in a better position to shade more light,” said Kitili.

Police spokesman Masoud Mwinyi said that he had been receiving such complaints, but said only his bosses can answer questions arising from the issue.

“I have been receiving such complaints, but it could be better if you get more information from my bosses,” he said

Neither the Inspector General of Police David Kimaiyo nor her deputy Grace Kahindi could be reached for comment.

The officers are part of the team which has been deployed to guard the new five armored presidential cars.

The cars were fist spotted on Sunday June 1,during  the 51st Madaraka Day at Nyayo stadium on.
