Nairobi, Kenya: Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD) co-principal Raila Odinga has said President Uhuru Kenyatta’s statement blaming politics for Mpeketoni attack is  unfortunate and unjustified.

His sentiments come a day after the president declared that the attacks were not the work of Al shabaab but were politically orchestrated saying local political networks were involved in the planning and execution of the killings.

Raila further said Uhuru's conclusion is likely to compromise the investigations yet to be conducted to determine and establish the masterminds behind the brutal attacks.

The former premier also wondered  why NIS did not take concrete measures at the local or national level yet it had knowledge of the impending attack.

"The President’s statement ignores the position taken by other countries and experts that Al Shabaab were indeed responsible for these attacks and that Al Shabaab never claims responsibility for attacks it has not carried out. It also defeats logic that NIS had information on the attacks which suggests that there was knowledge of those planning them yet no decisive or concrete steps were taken both at the local or national level," said Raila.

The former PM also called for an overhaul and reconstitution of country’s security organs to ensure national security, adding that the recruitment should reflect the diversity of the Kenyan people in equitable proportions.

Mpeketoni attacks that occurred Sunday and Monday nights killed over 50 people.
