Veteran politician Charles Rubia has dismissed the Saba Saba rally organised by Cord, terming it a degradation of the 1990’s original event which, he said, should be observed nationally in special remembrance of Kenyans’ sacrifices for freedom. Rubia, one of the founder members of the event, said the agenda being proposed for the upcoming rally risks dividing Kenyans along tribal lines as opposed to the 1990 event, which united Kenyans in the struggle for the second liberation.
Recounting the circumstances that led to Saba Saba, Rubia said it was a spontaneous uprising and it brought together people to Kamukunji to force matters work despite the difficult political circumstances. “To call it Saba Saba is a degradation of that solemn day which should be set aside nationally in special remembrance of Kenyans’ sacrifices to freedom,he said. Rubia said most of the problems being faced in the country can only be solved through sincere, discussions adding the Monday event is a complete misapplication of facts to compare it with 1990 Saba Saba.
“We have to be realistic enough to know that some of the problems being talked about are of a chronic nature and are not solved through some magic. Jubilee also did not create insecurity or Al-Shabaab or corruption or disunity and no magic through some dialogue will solve them,” said Rubia. “We must beware of the risk of ‘throwing out the baby with the bathwater’ by talking ourselves into a crisis where it does not exist. Management by crisis as they call it, is not a way of running a country,” he added.
Rubia said the basic freedoms they fought for had largely been acquired by the end of 1992 and the freedom of speech and assembly everyone enjoy now were non-existent and the opposition would not today have been able to go around the country demanding for dialogue. Rubia said they had applied for a license to hold the meeting at Kamukunji but the then Government did not respond or acknowledge it. Ends
