American President Barack Obama led a delegation of top U.S. officials in bilateral talks with the Kenyan Government at Statehouse, Nairobi.
Hosted by President Uhuru Kenyatta, the two sides met for a closed door session on Saturday afternoon.
Though the topics of discussion were not made public, analysts speculate that security and trade will top the list. Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery and his Finance counterpart Henry Rotich were part of the Kenyan delegation who met at State House.
Speaking during a Citizen TV interview on Thursday, State House Spokesperson Manoah Esipisu said that security and investment as the twin top issues that will be discussed in the bilateral talks. He added that the governments are working on a new visa agreement.
“Kenyans usually complain about the visa issue. You can only get a maximum of a one-year visa to the U.S. if you are a Kenyan. That is one of the things that is under review, a new agreement is to be signed tomorrow,” said Esipisu.
The two presidents are scheduled to issue a joint press conference after the talks.
This is Obama’s first presidential visit to Kenya. He has previously made personal trips to his paternal relatives in Kogelo, the last being 2006 when he served as a United States Senator.
