The United Kingdom is calling for dialogue to resolve the current standoff over the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC). UK High Commissioner to Kenya, Nic Hailey, says a peaceful resolution to the current stalemate over electoral reforms is crucial for free and fair elections.
While presiding over celebrations to mark the 90th birthday of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the British envoy registered his concerns over the state of Kenya saying outstanding electoral issues should be resolved through dialogue rather than the street protests.
“Everyone should support dialogue and resolving the issue in a peaceful way,” said Hailey.
The British envoy says the diplomatic corps and the clergy have done their best to bring the two coalitions to the negotiating table since Jubilee and CORD begun engaging, the opposition has postponed its angry street protests.“Our concern is both sides should agree on the rules of engagement before the match.”
Away from matters IEBC, political leaders as well as diplomats thronged the UK Ambassador’s residence to celebrate the Queen’s birthday, the envoy recognized Kenya’s place in the Queen’s life.
It is while on a visit to Kenya back in 1952, that the then princess received the news that she was now the Queen following the death of her father.
One of the Queen’s servants during that trip, Nahashon Muriithi, was also recognized for the role he played in serving the Queen during her stay in Kenya.
