Matatu

A Nairobi businesswoman whose matatu was torched during anti-IEBC protests has finally been handed a brand new matatu.

The matatu, belonging to businesswoman Agnes Macharia, was torched by protesters along Juja road on June 6 during a protests called by the Opposition.

Ms Macharia, a single mother, had narrated to various media houses how her only source of income was destroyed by rowdy protesters outside the Moi Airbase Barracks along Juja Road.

Pro-Jubilee supporters on June 8 dumped the matatu’s shell outside Cord leader Raila Odinga’s office at Capitol Hill.

Ms Macharia together with Prime City Transporters Sacco have since sued Cord leaders Raila Odinga, Kalonzo Musyoka and Moses Wetang’ula for the damages.

A funds-drive organised by a local vernacular radio raised sh3 million from well-wishers and politicians to help her back to business.

The brand new matatu was handed to Ms Macharia on Friday at an event attended by  Bishop Margaret Wanjiru and city politicians affiliated to the Jubilee coalition.

The new matatu is emblazoned  with interesting messages: “Defeat is not our portion “and “ No more destruction to our business”.
