Former Devolution Cabinet secretary Anne Waiguru defied all odds to clinch the Kirinyaga governor seat.
Waiguru, who has been in the spotlight over her role in the Sh790 National Youth Service scam during her tenure in office, was leading with 159, 055 votes against her main challenger Narc Kenya’s Martha Karua’s 119, 656.
The former CS, who has been campaigning on a platform of running the county government the same way she revamped NYS, thanked Kirinyaga residents for giving her an opportunity to serve them.
The candidate had faced challenges from within and outside the Jubilee party after some senior officials had insisted on her being cleared over corruption charges.
The final results which were expected to be announced last night indicated that Waiguru had garnered more votes than her challenger in Mwea constituency which was the swing vote constituency. Karua lost her bid mainly due to her earlier association with Nasa leaders before she decamped to President Uhuru Kenyatta’s Jubilee party.
