She could have had a successful career abroad, but preferred to use her knowledge to mentor and nurture the minds of the children she’d left back home. She found a teaching job at a kindergarten, but it didn’t take her long to realise that this wasn’t her calling.
“I loved working with kids, yes. But I was working with privileged children, who had food, clothes, love and parents. My heart was pulling me towards helpless children,” she explains.
Fast forward to two years later at a meeting for managers of children’s homes in Limuru, Central Province. Pastor Steve Githire, manager of Elshadai Children’s Centre, spotted a young feisty woman who looked out of place, nose ring, tattooed arm and all.

Hamilton triumphs
On a baking hot day at the Hungaroring circuit, the principals fought out an enthralling strategic battle, and Hamilton triumphed after managing his tyres shrewdly and pulling off some crucial overtaking manoeuvres.
Kimi Raikkonen's tyre strategy also paid off as he finished second, having started sixth on the grid, and he held off drivers' championship leader Sebastian Vettel, who endured a somewhat frustrating afternoon.

Sh2.5bn budget for Kenya’s golden bash
Lets now wait for CORDs conemnation as though they don't live in Kenya or they are not Kenyans
July 2013
- Minutes of the committee meeting held on July 9 this year indicate that the budget for former president Kibaki’s bronze statue was raised from Sh15 million to Sh50 million.
- Briefing members of the private sector on preparations for the event at a breakfast meeting on Thursday, Mr Iringo declared that the government was determined to ensure that the event eclipsed President Kenyatta’s inauguration ceremony on April 9 this year.
- The meeting further allocated Sh20 million for the acquisition of 20 billboard size portraits of the country’s founding father Mzee Jomo Kenyatta, former presidents Daniel arap Moi and Kibaki and current President Uhuru Kenyatta. This followed a proposal by the presidential master of ceremonies and the committee secretary, Mr Sammy Lui.

Poultry farming turns into money-spinner for ex-accountant
- Mrs Okwiri, 50, quit her job as an accountant after being in formal employment for only six months. To her friends, this was a risky gamble but she was convinced that time was ripe for her to go into self-employment.
- After quitting her accounting job, she realised that she didn’t have enough
money to go into poultry rearing, a market she had realised had few players. She started with selling second-hand clothes to generate enough cash to venture into poultry keeping. - Counting her profits every day, Mrs Okwiri is doing booming business and is an envy of many in Kisumu’s Nyamasaria estate and has a total of 1,000 chicks—700 broilers and 300 layers.

Billboards in UK tell Immigrants to ‘Go home or face arrest’
Saturday, July 27, 2013 ·
A former Liberal Democrat minister, Sarah Teather, has criticised a Home Office “go home or face arrest” mobile billboard advertising campaign as “nothing less than straightforward intimidation”.Teather, who accused ministers of “cranking up the anti-migrant rhetoric”, is MP for Brent Central, in one of six London boroughs where the week-long pilot scheme to encourage illegal migrants to leave Britain is taking place this week.
The advertising vans will also show residents how many illegal migrants have recently been arrested in their local area and carry a text number for overstayers to use to arrange their return home.
OP-ED:Kenyan Counties Can Use Diaspora Resources
Saturday, July 27, 2013 · - The Star
Now we know how President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Jubilee administration view Diaspora Kenyans. A couple of weeks ago, he appointed blogger Dennis Itumbi as Director Digital, New Media and Diaspora. Many Kenyans living abroad are as curious as ever to find out what, if anything, this position would entail. Only time will tell. Despite the heavy rhetoric, such action speaks volumes. Be that as it may be, devolved units have an opportunity to meaningfully engage Kenyans in the Diaspora. Rather than appointments with obscure titles apparently hurriedly cobbled together, counties can take advantage of central government’s omission. This opportunity may not only be fleeting but is also visible only to the discerning.Friday, 26 July 2013

KENYA: The Jubilee government launched a bare-knuckled attack on former Prime Minister Raila Odinga on Thursday, sensationally claiming he had orchestrated the heckling of its leaders at a public forum in Kisii.
In a scathing attack, Kariuki claimed the “retired Prime Minister” had refused to surrender six government vehicles that had been allocated to him when he served in the coalition government.
“He’s forever moaning that the government is not giving him recognition yet he has refused to return six government vehicles, has gone on and bought an illegal siren and is forever driving all over town using the wrong lanes,” charged the official.

Koigi wa Wamwere: Why I will buy Uhuru Kenyatta a bible
Koigi wa Wamwere abandoned the university at the age of 21 to fight President Jomo Kenyatta when it was almost a sacrilege to lift a finger against the man reverently referred to as the Burning Spear.
This week, the former Subukia MP, who was detained for 13 years, is still in his rebellious element.
Seen by some members of his Kikuyu community as a traitor and by a section of the public as a Kikuyu apologist when push comes to shove, he has now trained his guns on President Uhuru Kenyatta.
He fears the President could be reading a script from the discredited regimes of his father Jomo Kenyatta and political mentor Daniel arap Moi, and believes that for the Jubilee leader to succeed he must commit political suicide and read a certain verse in the Bible.
Kerry Kennedy in Speak the Truth to Power, which lists the 63-year-old firebrand as one of 50 ‘Human Rights Defenders Who Are Changing the World,’ says Mr Wamwere has emerged from the experience (of successive incarceration) “with a wisdom and a sense of peace almost beyond measure.”
Mr Wamwere shared his wisdom with Saturday Nation.
