.The four types are:
* Explorers - dopamine is the dominant chemical meaning they are novelty seeking, risk-taking and spontaneous.
* Builders - serotonin is the dominant chemical and they are calm, conscientious, loyal and cautious.
* Negotiators - oestrogen is the dominant chemical. They are imaginative, intuitive, compassionate and have good people skills.
* Directors are ruled by testosterone making them direct, decisive, competitive and often musical.
Explorers work well with other Explorers, and Builders go well with Builders, but Negotiators and Directors can find love together. Dr Fisher explains: 'The reasons why we love are incredibly complex, but it is possible to scientifically understand why people partner better with certain types.'
Other classic mismatches, according to Dr Fisher, were Jennifer Aniston (Builder) and Brad Pitt (Explorer). Pitt eventually left to find harmony with fellow-Explorer Angelina Jolie. And Guy Ritchie, a Director, and Madonna, another Explorer, struggled to make things work long-term. But Gordon Brown and wife Sarah are both Builders, and David Cameron and his wife Samantha are both Explorers, meaning they can support and respect each other.
Match.com’s relationship expert Kate Taylor says, “I think we’re all saddened by the split of Britain’s favourite young family, but Dr Helen Fisher’s theories help make sense of the reasons behind it. Personally I’m not convinced that this is the end for Katie and Peter, but knowing their personality types should give them the knowledge to understand each other and hopefully make it work long-term.”
