President Uhuru Kenyatta will be rubbing shoulders with some very important people when he arrives for a visit to New York City, USA, on Wednesday, September 23.
A dinner meeting with US President Barack Obama is expected during the visit. President Kenyatta will be joined by First Lady Margaret Kenyatta for the dinner.
Meetings David Cameron, the Prime Minister of England, Ban Ki-Moon, the United Nations Secretary General and other foreign leaders are all expected during the visit.
Among the people the President will meet with is Pope Francis. The meeting with the Pope will come on Friday, September 25. President Kenyatta is further expected to meet with other international figures during his packed schedule in New York City.
The trip is described as the busiest foreign trip made by President Kenyatta since becoming President.
President Kenyatta is further expected to address the United Nations General Assembly twice. The first address will come on Friday, Septmeber 25 while the second will be on Monday, September 28.
Ambassador Macharia Kamau, Kenya’s envoy to the United Nations, told the Daily Nation about the address: “The President is one of the few speakers at the plenary on Friday because Kenya co-chaired the working committee which formulated the Post 2015 development agenda on Sustainable Development Goals (SGDs),”
On Saturday, September 26, Kenyatta will be among the guests hosted by President Obama at a meeting on Peace and International Security. The meeting will be chaired by Obama.
Kenya and the USA have made strides to strengthen their ties in recent months. The most noticeable of all these efforts was the three day visit to Kenya in July of 2015 by Obama.
During the visit, the two nations signed KSh 1.2 trillion worth of deals. A huge chunk of the money, KSh 900 billion, was allocated to the construction of Lamu Port South Sudan and Ethiopia Transport Corridor (LAPSSET).
The US further made commitments to Kenya to aid in the fight against the al-Shabaab militia.
