Tetu top girl in 2011 KCPE drops out of Kenya High School for lack of fees

WilfredThe Star Sunday, November 10, 2013 ·
THE top girl in the 2011 KCPE in Tetu, Nyeri county,  has dropped out of school due to lack of fees. Winfred Wambui Nderui who is in Form II at Kenya High School attended class for only two weeks before she was sent home for non-payment of school fees.
Her mother Elizabeth Wangui said the 14-year-old is depressed by her situation and has even attempted suicide.“She now spends most of the time crying at home. She looks traumatised. She sometimes wakes very early and starts walking on the road to nowhere. She has also been having nightmares. All she wants is to return to class,” said Wangui.
Speaking to reporters at Ndugamano home on Tuesday, Wangui said her other daughter is a student at Othaya Girls Secondary School but is in and out of the class due to lack of fees. Her father Charles Nderui says he has visited every office including that of Children Department and no help is forthcoming.
He said the local CDF office has pledged to give the girl Sh20,000 which is still far short of the  Sh100, 000 his daughter needs to be accepted back in school.
Wambui is the last born in a poor family of five. Her parents are casual laborers at Ndugamano village and are unable to pay her school fees.
She is one of the 16 bright students whom former Tetu MP F T Nyammo used to pay fees for last year through the F.T. Nyammo Foundation. Nyammo discontinued the programme when he lost the seat in the March 4 general elections. .

Wambui who was at Ndugamano Primary School scored 375 marks in year 2011.She could not be picked by the Equity Bank Wings to Fly programme since the ex- MP had put her in his sponsorship programme. Area sub county commissioner Herman Shambi appealed to any well wishers to help the girl return to school.
Early this year, The Star carried the story of the 16 students whose fate was unknown after Nyammo who is the Chancellor and Proprietor of Inoorero University declined to continue paying for the school fees of the needy bright students.
