Telling the African story like never before, with courage and enthusiasm, Aura Obama was unique and authoritative and spoke perfect German. She was the principal speaker at the “Lessingtage” that took place on the Sunday, the 26th of January 2014 at the Thalia Theater in Hamburg, the hall was very full.

Dr Auma Obama, is a Kenya scholar, who studied in Germany, a half sister to Barrack Obama, a sociologist and journalist. Her theme was “You are Your Future”. She spoke at length, below are some of the issues she tackled.

Leadership:
Most developed countries can attribute their social-economic well being to the effective, competent and dedicated leadership.  Unfortunately this is not the case for Africa. Germany today is outstanding because of the sleepless nights Angelika Merkel, has been going through all these years; can we say the same about the numerous African leaders? Definitely  NO”.

Refugees:
The refugees are here to stay, and they shall continue to come until the root causes of the” push and pull” factors are well researched to find and implement  permanent solutions. Most often these people have lost everything due to wars, hunger and other unforeseen challenges. They have migrated to other geographical regions, most often because their farming lands have been destroyed or bought by the insatiable rich. They are not only Africans but also westerners. I advice you have sympathy and love for these people.

She went further on to assure Europeans that only insignificant number of Africans, about 4% leave the continent in search of greener pastures abroad. Thus, instead it is the home countries of the migrants that suffer with its accompanying brain drain.

"MEMIS":Calling people MEMIS “Menschen mit Migrationshintergrund “ for me is inappropriate, are we avoiding using the word "foreigners"? Every living human being is a foreigner at a giving point in time. I am privilege to speak on behalf of a lot people who have no voices; I am therefore challenge to call the spade a spade.

Africa as a Country:
This is wrong and need to be condemn by all civic institutions, the continent has about 54 countries, therefore grouping all African countries as one, adopting the same strategies and policies has never been successful why continue? Obama quizzed!. To understand a group of people you first need to know their culture, I mean their way of life, it is only then that one can deal perfectly with. This “one for all” approach is wrong and need to cease.

Education and Language:She made it clear to the “Memis” in the house, sorry “Ausländer” that until we learn the language, and understand the culture of non “Memis” we have no chance. You need to work hard and command respect for what you are.

Corruption & Resource Management.
It is no secret that African leaders are corrupt, but most often we forget that well established institutions and Government apparatus of western origin are equally guilty. If we stop bribing THEM, corruption shall at least decline.

Do you think German would allow others to come and aid them exploit diamond should they find one. Let alone Germans would get only 5-10% and the foreigners take the larger share. Yes we are at fault, but the developed countries must cease exploiting us. Yes.. We have leaved in this country for years, which African carries the title “Expert on Germany”, however a German travels a couple of times to Kenya and he becomes an Expert on Africa, this must come to an end.
You Are Your Future:Her NGO, “You are your future”, is directed at telling the youth the naked truth, their future and our future is in their hands, building a truthful foundation for tomorrow should be our collective responsibility. If Globalization could equate Integration the world shall be a better place for all. Let us be tolerant, welcoming and respect one another.
