Drama as Western Kenya-bound mourners fight over body at Kinungi

Residents of Kinungi trading centre in Naivasha were treated to a rare drama after mourners physically fought over of the body of a deceased. The incident on the Nairobi-Nakuru highway attracted residents and affected the flow of traffic with many curious to catch the unfolding drama. Screaming and wailing, the mourners who were headed to Western Kenya from Nairobi, went for each other hauling isults and threats during the weekend incident.

Trouble started after a woman claiming to be the wife of the deceased and accompanied by some friends, blocked the hearse ferrying the body. According to a witness Amos Kimani, the woman claimed the body had been sneaked from the mortuary in Nairobi without her consent. The witness said the woman and her friends hired a vehicle that chased the hearse before blocking it at the trading centre.

“The woman and her colleagues wanted to grab the body and this led to an exchange of bitter words before police intervened,” he said. Kimani said the incident lasted 45 minutes before the warring parties sorted out their differences and proceeded with the journey. Meanwhile, transport along the Mai Mahiu-Naivasha road was paralysed for over an hour after a lorry ferrying second hand clothes was involved in an accident. Police officers moved fast to the scene near Mai Mahiu town to stop the public from looting the clothes that were headed to Kampala.
