Below you will find examples of things you do every day that slowly make you grow old prematurely – such that you end up looking like a 30 year old while you are in your 20’s. Take your notes and remember to click share before you leave.
(1)Tweeting & Facebooking for too long
You stare at your phone for hours scrolling through dozens of tweets, instagram updates or emails. Well you know what, you are slowly ruining your neck and hurting your back muscles. Scrolling through dozens of tweets can lead to dizziness, blurred vision and sore neck muscles. Try to resist checking your phone every other minute.
(2)Basking in the sun
It’s holiday time, you will probably be spending most of your time outdoors basking under the sun. Well you should know that over-exposure to sunlight causes drying, wrinkling, blemishing and even skin cancers. Don’t expose your skin to direct sunlight for over 3 hours continuously…if you are light-skinned probably you need to do less than 1 hour a day.
(3)Smoking and puffing around
The moment you take a puff, you are committing your skin to a life of wrinkles. When you purse your lips to inhale the smoke, you add even more wrinkles to your skin. After only 10 years of aging you’ll look older than your parents (we’re assuming your parents don’t smoke). Quit smoking.
(4)You are a sloth
You sit down the whole day, you don’t exercise, you don’t dance, you don’t jump – you are simply preparing yourself to age prematurely. Don’t be a sloth, walk, exercise. Don’t just watch soccer, play it. Exercise has been shown to have significant anti-aging benefits that can slow down the process and provide better quality of life.
(5)Ignoring stress rather than dealing with it
You tend to keep things to yourself. When you are stressed you prefer to lock yourself up in a room and suffer alone… stop ignoring stress because the longer you try to ignore or escape from it the higher the levels of anxiety you’ll face. It is better to address all stressful matters immediately.
(6)Sitting in traffic for too long
Sure, there is nothing you can do about traffic. But studies have found that those who sit in traffic for more than 2 hours every day have a 40% increased risk of dying in the next three years than those who sit for less than 30 minutes a day. Take note.
(7)Wrong facial expressions
Each time you perform repeated facial expressions such as squinting and frowning a groove forms beneath the surface of your skin. As you grow older and older, your skin loses the flexibility and is no longer able to spring back in place. These grooves eventually become a permanent feature on your face. Tip: Avoid frowning or squinting too often.
(8) You sleep in wrong position
The way you sleep may actually cause aging. If you sleep with your face on the pillow, it puts pressure on your face each night. As the years go by, this can etch fine lines and wrinkles into your forehead and chin. Tip: Try to sleep on your back.
(9)Not drinking water
When was the last time you drank water? Loss of hydration in the skin shows in all sorts of ways – wrinkling, flaking and dryness. Dry skin is less resilient and tends to age quickly. Start taking at least 8 glasses of water per day and you’ll see some improvement in a few days from today.
(10)Working or reading non-stop
Do you sit behind the computer working for 8 hours a day? Or do you spend most of your time studying in the library? You should know that your body needs some rest. You need to start taking breaks in between work. Ideally, for every 52 minutes you spend working, you should rest for 8 minutes.
(11)Staying up late
Don’t sleep for less than 7 hours. Staying up late not only piles loads of pressure upon your system but also decreases your performance the next day. Make a point of going to bed early if you plan to wake up early the next day.
(12)Holding on to grudges
Letting go of grudges and bitterness when someone hurts you can help a lot. Grudges often lead to stress which, as you know, fast-tracks the aging process. Take it easy, make peace with those who hate you and accept the fact that you can’t make everybody happy.
(13)You drink alcohol
There is a very thin line between drink moderately and drinking too much. You drink too much if:
(a)You drink 3 to 4 bottles of beer per day
(b)You drink more than 175 ml of wine
Ask your doctor how much alcohol – if any – is safe for you.
(14) Eating every sugary snack you come across
With Christmas day nearby, there are many sweet temptations, but before you grab a candy bar, you should know how sugar affects your skin and what you can do about it. Sugar can attach to the collagen that is present in your skin triggering a process known as glycation. Glycation then makes your skin stiff and inflexible resulting in dry and dull looking skin.
(15)Eating nyama choma
Barbeque, roasted red meat or nyama choma as we know it is more of an enemy than a friend. Observational studies show that red meat is associated with a high risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Tip: Take nyama choma in moderation…at most 5 times per month.
