At least 90 people arrested in police swoops against the stripping naked of women in Nairobi.

The swoops came as a middle-aged woman was rushed to hospital after she was roughed up and stripped naked in Kayole area over claims she was indecently dressed.

The woman was at a bus stop at Mihango area Monday evening when she was accosted by a group of young men who accused her of being indecent.

Police and witnesses said this prompted a confrontation that saw her stripped naked and roughed up.

The gang later escaped as police were called to the scene. The woman was taken to hospital and police say they arrested 10 suspects at the site in a swoop later on.

80 more, mostly touts were arrested at various bus stops and especially that of Embasava where the earlier incident took place.

Nairobi Area head of CID Nicholas Kamwende said the suspects were being interrogated at various police stations.

“We are still talking to them as part of efforts to contain this menace,” said Kamwende.

Police said they had received “many” and increased complaints of harassment from women since the first incident happened.

Embasava operators later held a protest to Embakasi police station complaining police were targeting them for arrests as they denied involvement.

The incident came hours after a group protested in Nairobi, following an incident in which a group of men tore off a woman’s clothes for wearing a miniskirt.

The protesters shouted shame on you and handed out flowers at a bus stop where the attack took place.

The group organised the protest after a video of the attack went viral on social media last week.

Deputy President William Ruto waged into the debate, saying Kenya was not a “primitive” society and the men who stripped the woman should be arrested.

Both men and women, some dressed in miniskirts, marched to the bus stop and the offices of police boss David Kimaiyo, demanding an end to violence against women and arrest of those behind it.
