Zimbabwe's President Robert Mugabe got a little more than he bargained for last week at the inauguration of Muhammadu Buhari, Nigeria's new president, when local journalists questioned him about his 'refusal' to hand over power
“Are you happy to be in Nigeria?” “When are you stepping down?” “How is your health?” “How do you feel about the fact that you are in Abuja to witness a democratic handover of power when there is no such in your own country?”
These were some of the questions a visibily irate President Robert Mugabe was faced with on his arrival at President Buhari’s inauguration.
Perhaps the animosity was also driven by Mugabe’s comments last year that Nigeria is a corrupt country.
“Are we now like Nigeria where you have to reach your pocket to get anything done,” he said during his 90th birthday luncheon last year. “You see we used to go to Nigeria and every time we went there we had to carry extra cash in our pockets to corruptly pay for everything. You get into a plane in Nigeria and you sit there and the crew keeps dilly dulling without taking off as they wait for you to pay them to fly the plane”.
Mugabe is a divisive leader on the continent with just as many fans as detractors. But it’s nice to see African media asking a leader some tough questions for once. Let us know what you think in the comments section.
