Security Message for U.S. Citizens on Election Ruling

This is to inform U.S. citizens in Kenya that the Kenyan Supreme Court is expected to rule on the petitions challenging the presidential election result by March 30, 2013. The decision may be announced during the Easter holiday weekend, a time when many people go out of town. There could be a strong public reaction to the announcement; therefore, the U.S. Embassy strongly urges all U.S. citizens to avoid gatherings, demonstrations, downtown business areas, slums, and large crowds of any kind.

Remember even gatherings intended to be peaceful can turn violent with little or no warning. Demonstrations could also lead to traffic congestion and possible road closures. U.S. citizens are advised to be cautious and monitor local media for the latest information on demonstrations and traffic disruptions, particularly those who plan to spend the holiday away from home. For those who have not done so, we encourage you to read the Emergency Preparedness Section of the Embassy website.
You can stay in touch and get Embassy updates by checking the website of the U.S. Embassy in Nairobi. You can also get global updates at the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Consular Affairs website where you can find the current Worldwide CautionTravel WarningTravel Alert, and Country Specific Information. Follow us on Twitter and the ACS Nairobi page on Facebook as well, or you can download our free Smart Traveler App, available through iTunes, and the Android marketplace, to have travel information at your fingertips. If you don't have internet access, current information on safety and security can also be obtained by calling 1-888-407-4747 toll-free in the United States and Canada, or, for callers from other countries, a regular toll line at 1-202-501-4444. These numbers are available from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time, Monday through Friday (except U.S. federal holidays).
All U.S. citizens in Kenya are urged to register online at the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP). Registering gives U.S. citizens access to updated information on travel and security within Kenya and makes it easier for the Embassy to contact citizens in case of emergency.
